Evaluation

This project was based on social action so for my project I created a game concept based on the social action of air pollution. So my goal being with making a game concept is to make a game that would be enjoyable and get the message across, it would be fun to play and raise awareness for air pollution in the form of a social action game.

With this project I tried something new which was a learning experience and it was a new skill for future concepts or game documents. Different to previous projects were I would actually make the game this time it was a shorter length project meaning that it was just based on design hence the concept and not an actual game. Also coming up with different ideas and not finalising as it was a concept so I could change it and it was only possible ideas and features I didn’t have to worry about how to make it work and just go with the idea. In addition I explored a art style in games that is becoming more frequent which doesn’t definitely have a name yet but the name I found it as was stylised realism.

The thing for me that didn’t go so well was the anitial idea and coming up with what to do, then the drawing of the concept as I would say I’m that confident with my drawing skill to portray the idea in my head on paper. However I believe it went well as it isn’t what I have done before and I used my English skill for description with drawing to help get the idea across on paper. Another point that was difficult was the fact that it was a very short project so being used to longer time frames to work with it was less relaxed and I had to fit it what needed to be done in that time.

Air pollution research for social action

What Is Air Pollution?

Air pollution is the release of pollutants into the air that are damaging to human health and the planet as a whole.

What Causes Air Pollution?

Most air pollution comes from energy use and production, like cars and trucks, factories, power plants, incinerators, engine and anything that combusts fossil fuels such as coal, gas, or natural gas. By burning fossil fuels to release gases and chemicals into the air. Air pollution in the form of carbon dioxide and methane raises the earth’s temperature. Smog forms when the weather is warmer and there’s more ultraviolet radiation. Climate change also increases the production of allergenic air pollutants including mold and pollen.

Effects of Air Pollution

Air pollution can be responsible for smog, soot, hazardous air pollutants, greenhouse gases, pollen and mold.

Soot and smog is made up of tiny particles of chemicals, soil, smoke, dust, or allergens, in the form of gas or solids, that are carried in the air. The tiniest airborne particles in soot, whether they’re in the form of gas or solids, are especially dangerous because they can penetrate the lungs and bloodstream and worsen bronchitis, lead to heart attacks, and even hasten death.

Hazardous air pollutants can cause eye, skin, and lung irritation in the short term and blood disorders in the long term. Some of the most common hazardous air pollutants are mercury, lead, dioxins, and benzene.

Greenhouse gases are bad by trapping the earth’s heat in the atmosphere, greenhouse gases lead to warmer temperatures which then causes other climate change affects like rising sea levels, more extreme weather, heat-related deaths, and increasing transmission of infectious diseases like Lyme.

Then pollen and mold can be hazardous to health as mold can cause asthma attacks or an allergic response, and some molds can even produce toxins that would be dangerous for anyone to inhale.

How to Help Reduce Air Pollution

The less gasoline we burn, the better we’re doing to reduce air pollution and harmful effects of climate change. For driving, choose cars that get better miles per gallon of gas or choose an electric car. Get more people using electricity by wind or solar etc.

With all this in mind that is why I chose to focus on this topic for social action as it will benefit us if we try to make cleaner air and burn less to reduce climate change, as above proves that it can be dangerous to live in and actually kill people.

What is social action?

Social action means taking steps to change the things that are wrong in our society and introducing new ideas and processes for doing things better in the future.

Max Weber believed there is four types of social action which is “Traditional Social Action” which is actions controlled by traditions, “the way it has always been done”

Then “Affective Social Action” actions determined by someone’s specific affections and emotional state, so you do not think about the consequences.

“Value Rational Social Action”actions that are determined by a conscious belief such like religion.

“Instrumental-Rational Social Action” actions that are carried out to achieve a certain goal, you do something because it leads to a result.
